Young Women and BIPOC Allies Enthusiastically Tackle Construction Workshop at MZ PreFab Shop

The #BlackGirlsWillGetLove Workshop, which spanned two weekends, was an opportunity for participants, age 13 and up, to dive into the basics of finishing and drywall repair, electrical, plumbing, flooring, and maintenance skills. From cutting materials and using power tools to installing small hardware, the girls received comprehensive training in fundamental construction tasks. This incredible event was organized by the dynamic non-profit Black Girls Don't Get Love and its President, Eden Strachan.

The enthusiasm in the room was undeniable as the demos began and the girls circled up for a closer look. Each experts in their field, the trainers gave thorough demos but the real magic happened when the questions started flying. The vibe was casual and it seemed as though the girls were hanging with friends, able to ask the real questions with no pretense around any previous knowledge. Some had practical experience navigating repairs in their own homes and some had aspirations for careers, but all had an energy that couldn’t be denied: they were ready to learn. Smiles were common, laughter was frequent, and while safety was always at the forefront, the zest for power tools was contagious!

This workshop wouldn't have been possible without the collaboration of several key partners. We were thrilled to work alongside Shannon Howard of Heartfelt Construction, Romero Gossom of O.F.A. Construction INC., and Deli Vargas of Carpenters Union 277. Their dedication and enthusiasm were evident as they answered questions and guided the girls through each hands-on activity. Our own Derik Gibbs led much of the training alongside finishing expert Ed Karboski. Megan Foote prepared materials and kept things on track. The crew was joined by Shannon Ruane and President Andy Zombek, who were both on-site providing hands-on instruction to the participants.

While the #BlackGirlsWillGetLove Construction Workshop culminated on October 6th, we look forward to seeing the continued growth and learning of all participants as they build upon the skills they have already acquired.
